VMPC2000XL is a faithful emulator of the classic Akai MPC2000XL sampler and sequencer, bringing the nostalgic workflow and iconic sound of the original hardware to modern systems.
Quick Start Guide
- Download the Installer: Grab the installer for your operating system from the downloads page. Available for:
- macOS and Windows
- Linux: Ubuntu x86_64 binaries available, plus ZYpp packages for openSUSE, Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora.
- Familiarize with Shortcuts: Check out the keyboard shortcuts for efficient navigation, and consider grabbing a copy of the original 2000XL manual to help you get started.
- Load Samples:
Place your samples and files into this directory:
This is where the emulator will access and save all your files.
Important: The emulator renames files similarly to the original hardware, so avoid placing the only copy of important files in this folder, as data corruption may occur.

VMPC2000XL Features

Limitations
- No Signal Path Emulation: VMPC2000XL does not replicate the original unit’s analog inputs/outputs, so it won’t provide the “warm” or “dirty” sound characteristics of the hardware.
- Authentic Clumsiness: Like the original MPC2000XL, the interface can feel clunky for tasks like creating beats or managing sounds, making it a faithful but somewhat cumbersome experience.
- Approximate Filters: The digital per-voice filter is an approximation based on ear tweaking, meaning that certain settings on the real 2000XL might sound slightly different in the emulator.
- No FX Board Emulation: The emulator does not replicate the optional EB16 FX board found in some original units.

- Keyboard Shortcuts: Show keyboard mappings when hovering over the keyboard button in the top-right corner. Use Alt/Option/Ctrl to view specific key controls.
- Auxiliary LCD: Double-click the LCD to open an auxiliary display for easier editing.
- MIDI Controller Support: Use Shift + 0 to configure MIDI settings. MIDI control mode can be set to VMPC. Create custom presets using the LEARN function, and manage them in the preset manager. Presets are stored in
~/Documents/VMPC2000XL/MidiControlPresets.
- Bundled Presets: Currently supports Akai MPD218, Akai MPD16, and iRig PADS.
- Submit Your Controller: Let the developers know which MIDI controller you use to add more bundled presets.
macOS Users:
- FAT16 Mount Blocker Utility: This tool prevents macOS from corrupting MPC2000XL CF cards and other media. It mounts FAT16 volumes as read-only while running in the background. Use it if you’re dealing with file names longer than 8 characters to avoid corruption.
- Installation Notes: You MUST manually remove the previous VMPC2000XL installation from
/Applications and /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins before upgrading to v0.6.1. Visit the release page for more details.
Troubleshooting:
- Windows 10/11: If VMPC2000XL cannot access your Documents folder, you may need to grant permission. Instructions can be found on the Microsoft page.
- Missing DLL Errors (Windows): Download the necessary Microsoft update here.
- macOS Uninstallation: Remove previous versions manually before installing v0.6.1.
