Tamabot Tremolo | Audio Plugins for Free

Free Vintage-Style Tremolo Plugin

This one is a little different from the plugins we usually feature on AudioPluginsForFree.

Tamabot Tremolo is our first in-house plugin.

Rather than discovering and reviewing somebody else’s free software, this time we decided to build something ourselves. Tamabot Tremolo is deliberately simple: a straightforward tremolo effect with just the controls you actually need, wrapped in a dark, vintage-inspired interface.

And to be completely transparent, this first release is also a test.

It allowed us to learn the complete process behind creating an audio plugin: DSP, interface design, plugin formats, cross-platform compilation, testing and distribution.

We wanted to start with something small, functional and useful rather than trying to build an overly ambitious first plugin.

Hopefully, Tamabot Tremolo is only the beginning.

If everything goes well, more original AudioPluginsForFree plugins may follow in the future.

What is Tamabot Tremolo?

Tamabot Tremolo is a simple amplitude modulation effect designed to create rhythmic volume movement.

At its core, the plugin uses a sine-wave LFO to continuously modulate the volume of the incoming signal.

There are only two main parameters:

  • RATE — controls the speed of the tremolo.
  • DEPTH — controls how strongly the volume is modulated.

That is essentially it.

No modulation matrix.

No hidden menus.

No presets to browse through.

No complicated routing.

Just a straightforward tremolo effect.

RATE

The RATE control ranges from:

0.1 Hz to 20 Hz

At slower values, Tamabot Tremolo can create long, gentle volume swells.

Increase the rate and the effect gradually becomes more rhythmic.

At the highest settings, it can produce very fast amplitude modulation that moves into more experimental territory.

This makes it useful for everything from subtle movement to aggressive rhythmic effects.

DEPTH

The DEPTH parameter controls the intensity of the tremolo.

Range:

0% to 100%

At low settings, the volume movement remains subtle and can add a little life to otherwise static sounds.

At higher values, the tremolo becomes increasingly pronounced.

At maximum depth, the modulation produces the classic strong pulsing effect normally associated with tremolo.

Synchronized Stereo Modulation

Tamabot Tremolo processes stereo signals while keeping the modulation synchronized between the left and right channels.

The objective here was not to create an elaborate stereo-panning effect but rather a clean and predictable tremolo that preserves the position of the original sound.

It therefore works equally well on mono-style sources and stereo material.

Smooth Parameter Changes

One small detail that matters more than it may appear is parameter smoothing.

Changes to the modulation are smoothed internally to avoid unnecessary clicks or abrupt transitions when adjusting controls.

This is especially useful when automating the plugin inside a DAW.

Bypass

The interface also includes a dedicated BYPASS control.

When bypass is activated, the original dry signal passes through while the effect is smoothly disengaged.

The central display and LED visually reflect the bypass state.

It is a small feature, but one we wanted to implement properly rather than simply switching the processing on and off abruptly.

Animated Waveform Display

Between the RATE and DEPTH controls sits a small animated display showing the tremolo modulation.

The waveform responds to the current settings, giving immediate visual feedback about the speed and movement of the effect.

It is not an analyzer or measurement tool.

It is simply there to make the modulation easier to understand visually while giving the plugin a little personality.

A Vintage-Inspired Interface

Although Tamabot Tremolo is intentionally simple internally, we spent considerably more time than expected on the interface.

The final GUI takes inspiration from old hardware processors, with:

  • Dark metal textures
  • Large hardware-style knobs
  • Amber displays
  • Mechanical bypass button
  • LED indicator
  • Vintage-style panel graphics

The interface can also be resized, while maintaining its original proportions.

Tamabot Tremolo therefore remains usable on different screen sizes without distorting the design.

Created by Tamabot and AudioPluginsForFree

The plugin carries the Tamabot identity while being released directly through AudioPluginsForFree.

The Tamabot logo inside the interface links directly to the Tamabot Bandcamp page, while the AudioPluginsForFree logo links back to our website.

For us, this plugin is less about creating the most advanced tremolo available and more about establishing the foundations required to develop our own audio tools.

What Can You Use It On?

A tremolo is one of the simplest effects in audio production, but it can still be extremely useful.

Tamabot Tremolo can work particularly well on:

  • Electric piano
  • Guitar
  • Synth pads
  • Organs
  • Ambient sounds
  • Sustained chords
  • Drones
  • Loops
  • Effects
  • Experimental textures

Slow modulation can add gentle movement to static sounds.

Faster settings can transform sustained material into rhythmic patterns.

And extreme RATE values can produce more unusual modulation effects.

Simple by Design

There are obviously much more advanced tremolo plugins available.

Tamabot Tremolo does not offer:

  • Multiple LFO shapes
  • Tempo synchronization
  • Stereo phase offset
  • Envelope followers
  • Modulation routing
  • Preset systems

That is intentional.

For our first plugin, the goal was to create something that works reliably, sounds correct and remains extremely easy to use.

RATE.

DEPTH.

BYPASS.

That is the entire concept.

Cross-Platform

Tamabot Tremolo v1.0 is available for:

macOS

AU + VST3

Universal binary supporting:

  • Apple Silicon — arm64
  • Intel — x86_64

The macOS version has been tested successfully in GarageBand.

Windows

VST3 — 64-bit

Windows x86_64 build.

Linux

VST3 — x86_64

Distributed as a .tar.gz archive to preserve the required executable permissions.

Completely Free

Tamabot Tremolo is available completely free from AudioPluginsForFree.

We have also deliberately decided not to use paid Apple or Microsoft developer certification programs.

Our objective with AudioPluginsForFree is to distribute genuinely free software without adding recurring certification costs to the project.

Because of this, macOS or Windows may occasionally display a security warning when installing the plugin.

This does not mean that the plugin is damaged.

Detailed installation instructions are included with every download explaining how to authorize the plugin without disabling your operating system’s security globally.

Our First Plugin — And Hopefully Not the Last

Tamabot Tremolo should probably be viewed as version 1.0 of our plugin-development experiment as much as version 1.0 of the plugin itself.

It helped us establish a complete development workflow covering:

  • Audio processing
  • GUI design
  • AU and VST3 formats
  • Apple Silicon and Intel support
  • Windows builds
  • Linux builds
  • Automated cross-platform compilation
  • Testing
  • Packaging
  • Distribution

That infrastructure can now be reused.

Which means the next plugin should be considerably easier to build than the first one.

We already have plenty of ideas.

Whether they become actual plugins will depend on how this experiment goes, but hopefully Tamabot Tremolo will be the first of several original AudioPluginsForFree releases.

Final Verdict

Tamabot Tremolo is not trying to reinvent tremolo.

And that is precisely the point.

It is a simple, free and visually distinctive tremolo plugin offering exactly what its interface suggests: control over modulation speed and depth, with no unnecessary complexity.

More importantly for us, it represents something new.

Tamabot Tremolo is the first plugin developed and released directly by AudioPluginsForFree.

Consider it our first experiment.

A small one.

But hopefully the beginning of something much bigger.
