Free MPC-Style Online Drum Machine, Sampler and Groovebox
Shuffle Drummer is a free online drum machine, sampler and groovebox designed around one central idea: making programmed beats actually groove.
Created by French hip-hop producer Mani Deïz and developed with Olivier Kauffman, Romain Mithault and François Frimont, Shuffle Drummer runs entirely inside a modern web browser. There is no software to install and no plugin to load into your DAW.
Open the website and you immediately get access to a surprisingly complete beatmaking environment combining an MPC-inspired workflow, step sequencing, genuine swing and shuffle, micro-timing, velocity, sample chopping, synthesized drums, bass, mixing tools, vintage processing, song arrangement and audio/MIDI export.
And unlike many browser-based music applications, Shuffle Drummer is built primarily around feel rather than perfect quantization.
A Drum Machine That Runs Entirely in Your Browser
Shuffle Drummer is based on the Web Audio API.
There is no VST3, AU or AAX plugin to install.
There is also no large standalone application to download.
The complete instrument runs in a browser tab on desktop computers and mobile devices.
This makes it unusually accessible: open the page, press Play and start programming.
Built by a Hip-Hop Producer
Shuffle Drummer was conceived by Mani Deïz, a French hip-hop producer who has been making beats since 1998.
The current project credits are:
- Mani Deïz — concept
- Olivier Kauffman — programming
- Romain Mithault — design
- François Frimont — additional development assistance
That producer-led origin is important because Shuffle Drummer does not feel like a generic programming demonstration with a drum-machine interface placed on top.
Its emphasis is clearly on beatmaking.
Groove Comes First
A perfectly quantized rhythm can easily sound mechanical.
Shuffle Drummer was designed specifically to avoid that problem.
Its groove system combines:
- Swing
- Shuffle
- Velocity
- Micro-timing
- Per-track timing variations
- MPC-style timing correction
The result is a rhythm engine that lets individual elements push or drag against the beat.
For hip-hop, boom bap, lo-fi and related styles, those small timing differences can be just as important as the drum samples themselves.
96 PPQ Timing
Shuffle Drummer uses 96 PPQ timing correction.
This provides enough timing resolution to move events away from a perfectly rigid grid.
Instead of every hi-hat, snare and kick landing exactly on an idealized step, hits can be positioned slightly ahead of or behind it.
That is fundamental to the type of groove associated with classic hardware sequencing.
Real Swing and Shuffle
Swing is not treated as an afterthought.
A dedicated swing/shuffle engine changes the rhythmic relationship between steps, allowing straight sequences to develop a much stronger rhythmic feel.
This can transform a simple hi-hat pattern from something rigid and computer-like into a rhythm with considerably more movement.
Three Velocity Levels Per Step
Each sequencer step can use three velocity levels.
That makes it possible to program:
- Accents
- Normal hits
- Ghost notes
without leaving the sequencer.
Velocity variation is particularly useful on hi-hats, snares and percussion, where identical repeated hits can quickly make a beat sound artificial.
Human Timing Drift
Shuffle Drummer includes a TIMESHIFT system providing human timing drift of up to approximately:
±50 milliseconds
This allows individual tracks to move away from the strict rhythmic grid.
A snare can sit slightly late.
Hi-hats can drag.
Percussion can move around the main groove.
The important point is that timing imperfection becomes something you can deliberately design rather than simply randomize.
Shuffle Individual Tracks
Each drum track has its own shuffle function.
This means you can experiment with the groove of one element without destroying the entire rhythm.
For example, keep the kick stable while shuffling the hi-hats until an interesting pattern appears.
Shuffle Everything
A dedicated Shuffle All command can randomize the complete rhythmic configuration.
This turns Shuffle Drummer into a useful idea generator.
Start from a conventional pattern, shuffle it and keep the happy accident if something interesting appears.
Step Sequencer
At the center of the machine is a conventional step sequencer.
The primary drum tracks include:
- Kick
- Snare
- Hi-hat
- Open hat
- Crash
- Ride
Patterns can extend across multiple bars rather than being restricted to a single 16-step loop.
That allows complete rhythmic phrases to develop over time.
Drum Banks
Shuffle Drummer includes curated drum banks for quickly switching the sonic character of the machine.
The default interface already makes its hip-hop orientation obvious, with kits designed around punchy kicks, cracked snares, crisp hats and classic beatmaking textures.
Synthesized Drums
Not everything in Shuffle Drummer depends on samples.
The system also contains fully synthesized drum sounds created with the Web Audio API.
This provides an alternative to fixed sample playback and expands the sonic range of the machine.
Load Your Own Drum Sounds
Version 1.15 significantly improves the free workflow by allowing users to load their own samples directly onto drum tracks without creating an account.
Drop your sounds onto the drum slots and start playing.
An account is only necessary if you want those uploaded sounds to remain available after reloading the application.
Without an account, they disappear when the browser session is refreshed.
Built-In Sampler
Shuffle Drummer is also a full sampler.
Drop an audio file into the sampler and you can:
- View its waveform
- Define slice points
- Chop the sample
- Map slices to pads
- Change pitch
- Sequence the resulting chops
This creates a workflow strongly reminiscent of classic MPC-style sample-based beatmaking.
Automatic Sample Slicing
Samples can be divided automatically or manually.
Once sliced, individual sections are mapped to pads so they can be rearranged into completely new musical phrases.
A melodic loop can therefore become raw material rather than simply playing back unchanged.
Pitch the Slices
Sample slices can be pitched up or down.
This is particularly useful for classic hip-hop techniques such as:
- Pitching old samples down
- Creating chipmunk-style vocal chops
- Retuning melodic fragments
- Turning one sample into several related textures
Per-Slice Envelopes
Attack and decay can be adjusted for individual chops.
That allows samples to become:
- Tighter
- More percussive
- Softer
- More sustained
without editing the original audio externally.
Multiple Sample Banks
Several sample banks can be loaded and switched during a session.
This expands the sampler beyond a single loop and makes it possible to build more complex arrangements from multiple sources.
Remove Drums from Samples
One of Shuffle Drummer’s more unusual tools is a Remove Drums function for imported samples.
It uses conventional harmonic/percussive separation rather than generative AI.
The objective is to reduce the rhythmic component of an existing sample so that new drums can be programmed around the remaining material.
As with any source-separation process, results depend heavily on the original recording.
Dense or complex material can leave audible remnants.
But for beatmakers working with loops, it can be an extremely useful creative tool.
MPC-Style Pads
Samples can be played from an MPC-inspired pad interface.
The pads can be triggered using:
- Mouse
- Touchscreen
- Computer controls
- MIDI hardware
This gives Shuffle Drummer a more performance-oriented character than a conventional browser step sequencer.
MIDI Controller Support
Shuffle Drummer supports external MIDI controllers through Web MIDI.
That includes pad controllers and compatible MPC-style hardware.
For users with a physical controller, this dramatically changes the experience.
Instead of clicking notes onto a screen, Shuffle Drummer can become a playable browser-based instrument.
Live Play
A dedicated Live Play environment allows melodic parts to be performed rather than simply programmed.
Controls include:
- Octave
- Transposition
- Fine tuning
- Looping
Performed notes can also be recorded.
Basslines
Shuffle Drummer isn’t restricted to percussion.
A built-in keyboard allows basslines and melodic material to be added alongside the drums and samples.
This moves the application closer to a complete groovebox rather than simply an online drum machine.
Full Arrangement Mode
A dedicated DAW-style arrangement environment allows patterns to be organized into complete tracks.
Instead of exporting a collection of loops and finishing everything elsewhere, users can construct:
- Intros
- Verses
- Hooks
- Breaks
- Outros
inside the browser.
This makes Shuffle Drummer capable of going from the first kick to a substantially finished beat without requiring a conventional DAW.
Per-Track Filtering
Individual drum tracks include filtering.
The interface can switch the track controls to:
- High-pass filtering
- Low-pass filtering
This makes it easy to clean up or reshape individual drum elements without opening a separate mixer window.
Master EQ
A dedicated Master EQ is included for shaping the overall tonal balance.
This is useful for quickly correcting an overly bright, dark or bass-heavy beat before export.
Bus Compressor
Shuffle Drummer includes an SSL-style bus compressor on the master section.
Controls include:
- Threshold
- Ratio
- Attack
- Release
- Makeup gain
- Sidechain high-pass filter
Gain reduction is displayed directly in the interface.
This is considerably more sophisticated than the simple one-knob compression found in many browser beatmakers.
Transient Designer
A built-in transient processor provides independent control over:
- Attack
- Sustain
Attack determines punch.
Sustain controls body.
This is especially useful on drum-heavy material where the relationship between transient impact and decay can dramatically change the feel of the groove.
Tape Emulation
Shuffle Drummer also includes tape emulation.
This can add coloration and density to the master output, helping clean digital samples feel less sterile.
For boom bap and lo-fi production, this fits naturally into the application’s overall philosophy.
Vintage and Lo-Fi Processing
Additional processing includes:
- Vintage coloration
- Bitcrushing
- Lo-fi effects
These tools are particularly appropriate for producers interested in dusty or deliberately degraded textures.
Custom Vinyl Noise
The Vintage section can even work with user-supplied vinyl recordings.
Load your own vinyl noise and Shuffle Drummer can incorporate it into the beat.
The vinyl layer can also be shuffled for variation.
Stereo Widener
A stereo widening stage is available on the master.
This can increase the perceived width of the finished beat before export.
As with any widening process, it is worth checking mono compatibility when using stronger settings.
Limiter
The master chain also contains a limiter.
The current interface provides controls for:
- Threshold
- Output level
with gain-reduction metering.
This makes it possible to control peaks and raise the overall level before exporting a beat.
LUFS Meter
A built-in LUFS meter provides loudness information directly inside the application.
This is a welcome addition for a browser groovebox because it lets producers evaluate output level rather than relying entirely on subjective loudness.
WAV Export
Finished material can be exported as WAV audio.
Available workflows include:
- Full master
- Individual stems
- Live recording
The resulting audio can then be imported into a conventional DAW such as Ableton Live, FL Studio or Logic for additional production, mixing or mastering.
Live Recording Without an Account
As of version 1.15, REC LIVE no longer requires an account.
You can record the complete live output, including:
- Mutes
- Solos
- FX movements
- Real-time performance changes
directly to a WAV file.
This is particularly useful for producers who prefer performing an arrangement rather than drawing every change into a timeline.
MIDI Export
Shuffle Drummer can also export MIDI.
The drum arrangement is exported as six separate MIDI tracks inside a ZIP archive.
The files use:
- General MIDI drum mapping
- MIDI Channel 10
- Programmed velocities
- Swing information
- Full sequencer length
This is extremely useful if Shuffle Drummer is being used primarily as a groove generator.
Create the rhythm in the browser, then transfer the MIDI into your DAW and replace the sounds with any drum instrument you prefer.
Share a Beat with a Link
One of the advantages of being browser-based is instant sharing.
Shuffle Drummer can generate a shareable beat link.
Another user can open the link and immediately hear or remix the beat.
That makes collaboration much easier than sending project files between incompatible DAWs.
Free Account for Saving Your Work
You do not need an account simply to use the machine.
Recent updates have opened the mixer, effects, sampler, pads, piano and master chain to everyone.
A free account is primarily used to keep your work.
It unlocks persistent features such as:
- Saving
- Loading
- Persistent sample storage
- Standard WAV export
- Exclusive kits
So the distinction is important:
Shuffle Drummer is free to play without registration.
Create a free account when you want the browser application to remember your work between sessions.
Works on Mobile
Shuffle Drummer also works on smartphones.
A dedicated full-screen touch layout makes the interface usable without a desktop computer.
That turns it into an interesting portable sketchpad.
A beat can be started on a phone and later developed further on another device.
Frequent Updates
Shuffle Drummer is actively developed, with updates arriving frequently.
Recent releases have improved areas including:
- Account-free operation
- User sample loading
- Live WAV recording
- Playback cursor accuracy
- Audio latency compensation
- Synchronization after BPM changes
The current site identifies the application as version 1.15.
No Download and No Installation
Perhaps the biggest practical advantage is how little commitment is required to try it.
There is:
- No installer
- No plugin scan
- No license manager
- No large sample-library download
- No mandatory account to start
Open the website and the instrument is ready.

Potential Limitations
Shuffle Drummer is a web application rather than a conventional VST3, AU or AAX plugin.
You cannot insert it directly onto a DAW track.
The normal workflow is to create material in the browser and then export WAV stems, a master or MIDI if further production is required.
Browser-based audio performance can also depend on the computer, operating system, browser and audio interface configuration.
The drum-removal function should not be confused with modern AI stem separation. It uses conventional audio separation techniques, and complex recordings can leave artifacts or percussion remnants.
Without a free account, sessions and uploaded samples are not permanently stored when the page is reloaded.
But these limitations are relatively minor considering the amount of functionality available without paying or installing anything.
Final Verdict
Shuffle Drummer is far more ambitious than the phrase “online drum machine” suggests.
At first glance, it looks like a convenient browser-based rhythm box.
Spend a little more time with it and a much more complete instrument appears.
There is a serious groove engine underneath the interface, with 96 PPQ timing, real swing, velocity variation and ±50 ms micro-timing giving producers considerably more control over feel than the average browser sequencer.
Then there is the sampler.
Load your own material, chop it into slices, pitch the pieces and play them from pads.
Add your own drums.
Program a bassline.
Arrange complete sections.
Mix the result through EQ, an SSL-style bus compressor, transient processing, tape emulation and a limiter.
Then export the finished beat, stems or MIDI into your main DAW.
The ability to record an entire live performance directly to WAV without even creating an account makes the current v1.15 release particularly attractive.
But Shuffle Drummer’s strongest feature may simply be its immediacy.
There is nothing to install and almost nothing standing between opening the site and making music.
For hip-hop, boom bap, lo-fi and sample-based production, Shuffle Drummer is one of the most interesting free browser grooveboxes we’ve seen — and it is genuinely useful rather than merely being an online demo.
