Free True-Peak Limiter

for Mastering on macOS

MUEDlim is a free true-peak limiter from MUEDsp, designed as a simple final-stage mastering processor for controlling inter-sample peaks and setting a precise output ceiling.

Like MUEDsat, MUEDlim is not a reduced demo of a commercial plugin. It is the actual final peak-limiting stage extracted from the MUEDsp mastering chain currently under development and released as a complete standalone plugin for free.

Its philosophy is deliberately minimalist: drive the signal into the limiter with INPUT, choose the maximum true-peak level with CEILING, and let the processor handle the rest.

A True-Peak Limiter Designed for Mastering

A conventional sample-peak limiter can prevent individual digital samples from exceeding a specified level while still allowing reconstructed analog playback to produce peaks above that value.

These are known as inter-sample peaks.

MUEDlim is specifically designed as a true-peak limiter, detecting these peaks and keeping the resulting signal beneath the ceiling selected by the user.

This makes it particularly appropriate as the final dynamics processor in a mastering chain.

Only Two Main Controls

MUEDlim takes a very different approach from limiters packed with attack, release, lookahead, character, oversampling and transient parameters.

There are only two main controls:

INPUT

INPUT determines how hard the audio is driven into the limiter.

Its range is:

−6 dB to +18 dB

Increasing INPUT raises the signal level and therefore causes more limiting.

In practical terms, INPUT becomes the main loudness control: push it until the desired combination of loudness and gain reduction is achieved.

CEILING

CEILING establishes the maximum allowed true-peak level.

Its range is:

−3 to 0 dBTP

The default setting is:

−1 dBTP

That gives you direct control over the final true-peak ceiling without requiring additional output-gain stages.

Inter-Sample Peak Protection

True-peak limiting is especially relevant when preparing masters for real-world distribution.

Even when a digital waveform appears not to exceed 0 dBFS, reconstruction during playback or conversion can potentially produce higher peaks between the individual samples.

MUEDlim is specifically designed to catch these inter-sample peaks.

Rather than simply watching conventional sample values, the limiter aims to ensure that the reconstructed true peak remains within the selected dBTP ceiling.

Integrated LUFS Metering

Despite its intentionally minimal processing controls, MUEDlim provides considerably more information in its metering section.

The interface includes an Integrated LUFS readout, allowing you to monitor the average perceived loudness of the program over time.

This is particularly useful during mastering because you can increase INPUT while simultaneously observing how the overall loudness of the track develops.

Short-Term Loudness

MUEDlim also displays Short-Term LUFS.

While Integrated LUFS provides an overall measurement, short-term loudness gives a more immediate picture of how loud the current section of the music is.

This can help identify differences between:

  • Verses and choruses
  • Breakdowns and drops
  • Quiet and loud passages
  • Different sections of a master

Gain Reduction Metering

A dedicated GR display shows the amount of gain reduction being applied by the limiter.

This is one of the most important measurements when using MUEDlim.

If INPUT is increased aggressively, the gain-reduction display lets you see how much limiting is required to maintain the selected ceiling.

Used together with careful listening, this helps prevent excessive limiting from unnecessarily flattening transients or dynamics.

Loudness Range

The interface also provides a Range measurement in LU.

This gives additional information about the dynamic behavior of the material rather than focusing only on maximum loudness.

For mastering work, this can be useful when evaluating whether increased limiting is beginning to reduce the natural contrast between quieter and louder sections.

True-Peak Meter

MUEDlim includes a dedicated true-peak meter alongside its numerical dBTP measurement.

This provides immediate visual feedback showing how close the processed signal is getting to the selected ceiling.

With the default ceiling set to −1 dBTP, for example, the meter provides a quick way to confirm that the final output remains controlled.

Loudness History

The central display includes a loudness-history graph.

Rather than showing only instantaneous values, the graph provides a visual representation of how loudness develops over time.

A target reference can also be displayed, making it easier to understand the relationship between the current material and the selected loudness objective.

This makes MUEDlim more than a simple two-knob limiter: the processing is deliberately minimal, while the interface provides useful information for making mastering decisions.

Active / Bypass

MUEDlim includes an ACTIVE / BYPASS switch.

This provides a quick way to compare the limited and unprocessed signal.

A/B comparison is particularly important with limiters because increased loudness can easily create the impression that the processed version sounds better.

Bypassing the processing periodically can help determine whether the limiter is actually improving the master rather than simply making it louder.

A Minimal Mastering Workflow

The basic MUEDlim workflow is extremely simple:

  1. Insert MUEDlim near the end of the mastering chain.
  2. Set the desired CEILING.
  3. Increase INPUT until you reach the desired loudness.
  4. Watch the gain reduction and true-peak measurements.
  5. Monitor Integrated and Short-Term LUFS.
  6. Use ACTIVE/BYPASS to evaluate the processing.

For many mastering situations, that may be all that is required.

The simplicity is intentional: MUEDlim removes parameters that can distract from the central mastering decision — how much limiting does the track actually need?

Part of the MUEDsp Masterchain

MUEDlim comes from the same broader project as MUEDsat.

The developer is building a complete MUEDsp mastering suite, and MUEDlim represents its final peak-limiting stage extracted into an independent plugin.

This means MUEDlim was designed as part of an actual mastering workflow rather than as an isolated limiter experiment.

Best Uses

Final Mastering Limiter

MUEDlim’s primary purpose is to sit at the end of a mastering chain and prevent true peaks from exceeding a defined ceiling.

Streaming Masters

The combination of LUFS and true-peak metering makes it convenient for preparing masters where both perceived loudness and peak behavior need to be monitored.

Mix Bus Protection

Used conservatively, it can catch occasional peaks without requiring a complicated limiter setup.

Quick Loudness Checks

Because the interface combines limiting with Integrated LUFS, Short-Term LUFS, gain reduction, loudness range and true-peak information, it can also serve as a convenient final loudness-monitoring stage.

Compatibility

MUEDlim is currently available for macOS.

Supported formats are:

  • VST3
  • Audio Unit (AU)
  • AAX for Pro Tools

The macOS build is Universal and supports both:

Final Verdict

MUEDlim follows the same appealing philosophy as MUEDsat: take one useful part of a professional mastering workflow, remove everything unnecessary, and release it as a straightforward free plugin.

Its two-control design makes it exceptionally easy to understand. INPUT determines how hard you hit the limiter, while CEILING defines the maximum true-peak output. Behind that simplicity is a useful monitoring environment covering Integrated and Short-Term LUFS, gain reduction, loudness range and true peaks.

For macOS producers looking for a free true-peak mastering limiter, MUEDlim is particularly attractive because it combines the limiter and the essential loudness information needed to make sensible mastering decisions without turning the process into a parameter-management exercise.
