Khorlo is a free experimental synth from JAS-I built around eight physically modelled strings struck by eight independent impulse pluckers that rotate around a 3D cylinder. Instead of the usual oscillators and envelopes, the sound and rhythm come from how the pluckers hit the strings, so it works as a self-generating rhythm engine as much as a synth.
Features
- Eight independent strings and pluckers, each rotating at its own speed, for overlapping polyrhythms and evolving patterns.
- Pluck height changes the tone in real time, from bright and thin to dull and round.
- Six modulation shapers you can draw by hand, usable as envelopes or LFOs.
- Deep modulation matrix where almost any parameter can be a target, including other modulators.
- Four assignable macros, plus velocity, mod wheel and aftertouch support.
- Ten built-in effects (chorus, delay, phaser, reverb, distortion, EQ and more) in a reorderable rack.
- 3D interface with visual customization, plus a Performance Mode for weaker machines.
It’s suited to generative music, polyrhythmic percussion, ambient textures and unusual basses, less to people who just want quick presets.
Compatibility
Free beta, no account or activation needed. VST3/AU/CLAP on macOS (Intel & Apple Silicon), Windows and Linux, all 64-bit.
