FireBird 2, by Tone2, is a subtractive synth built around Harmonic Content Morphing (HCM) — a technique that reshapes standard and complex waveforms in real time (octave-shifting, syncing, spectral stretching) to get fat, evolving tones out of a single oscillator. It shipped as a $79 commercial synth before Tone2 released it as freeware.
Features
- Harmonic Content Morphing synthesis with over 18,000 combinable/modulatable spectra.
- 84 morphable oscillator types plus 23 spectral “modifiers” for reshaping harmonics.
- 38 filter types, including Moog, vocal, phaser, comb, EQ, FM and AM filters.
- 437 hand-picked presets, 21 arpeggiator types, 13 effects, true stereo and 4x unison modes.
Can get close to additive, FM, phase-distortion, supersaw, vocoder or sync sounds, and covers natural instrument tones like piano, brass, and organ.
Compatibility
Windows only (XP through 10), 32-bit friendly (400MHz+ CPU). No longer listed on Tone2’s current site — a legacy freeware release.
