FB-02
1986 Yamaha FB-01 vibe, modern plug-in comfort
If you love that lean, glassy 4-op FM of the mid-80s, FB-02 nails the Yamaha FB-01 sound engine and drops it into every major format on Windows and macOS—with conveniences the rack never had: a resizable UI, Program Browser, SysEx import/export, MIDI Learn, and even MTS-ESP dynamic micro-tuning.
Formats: Windows VST2/VST3/CLAP/AAX (32/64-bit) • macOS VST2/VST3/CLAP/AU/AAX (Universal Binary 2 — Intel & Apple Silicon)
Engine: Native C++ for low CPU on “lighter” systems
Why you’ll care
Faithful 4-op FM: simulation of the original FB-01 sound generation—perfect for E-pianos, bells, basses, mallets, and that unmistakable “DX-adjacent” sheen.
Factory ROM + more: includes the original presets and extra sounds.
Hands-on editing: the UI lets you edit patches much like the hardware.
Bring your racks back: SysEx import/export for old projects and carts.
Plays nice in modern rigs: MIDI Learn for every parameter, MTS-ESP for per-note/scale micro-tuning, resizable UI (except legacy “.N” builds).
Quick-start (2 minutes)
Install the build for your OS/format (see downloads below).
Load FB-02 on an instrument track and browse Factory sounds.
For custom tones: open the Program Browser, duplicate a patch, then adjust operator levels, ratios, and envelopes—small moves go far.
MIDI Learn filter/EQ or operator level to a knob for on-the-fly morphing.
Want vintage tuning? Enable MTS-ESP and load a scale from your micro-tuning tool.
Patch recipes
Crystal EP (classic ’86)
Start from a bell/EP preset → raise modulator ratio slightly → slow the attack on the carrier → a touch more release → chorus in your DAW.Synth Bass (dry & punchy)
Ratio 1:1 on the carrier, short decay, minimal release → add a sub-ish operator an octave below → compress post-plugin, HPF ~30–35 Hz.Glass Mallet
Higher modulator ratios (3–5x), short decay on modulators → sprinkle velocity on mod depth for dynamic sparkle.

Tips & workflow
Latency/CPU: it’s feather-light, but if you stack instances, print layered parts.
SysEx goldmine: import classic FB-01 banks to revisit 80s arrangements.
Micro-tuning: with MTS-ESP, explore non-12TET scales for film/ethnic cues.
UI scale: use the resizable builds unless you need the legacy “.N” version.
Download FB-02, load a factory EP or mallet, tweak operator ratios a hair, and you’re in 1986—minus the menu diving and aging ROM carts. If you’ve got classic SysEx banks lying around, this is your time machine.
